Technology companies, such as Apple and Samsung, rely heavily on cobalt mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This article will explore the role of technology companies in addressing the issue of conflict mining for cobalt.

Technology companies are among the biggest consumers of cobalt, which is used in the production of batteries for smartphones, laptops, and other electronic devices. However, much of this cobalt is mined using forced labor and child labor, and is sold on the black market to fund armed groups.

Technology companies have a responsibility to address the issue of conflict mining for cobalt. This includes ensuring that their supply chains are free of conflict minerals, and supporting ethical and sustainable mining practices.

Many technology companies have taken steps to address the issue of conflict mining for cobalt. Apple, for example, has implemented a comprehensive program to identify and address human rights abuses in its supply chain. Samsung has also committed to sourcing 100% of its cobalt from certified, responsible sources by 2025.

However, more needs to be done. Technology companies must work together with mining companies, governments, and civil society organizations to address the root causes of conflict mining for cobalt and support sustainable and ethical mining practices.
