The largest man-made hole in Germany: Hambach open pit mine - where lignite is mined. In 2020, 20.7 million tons of coal were mined here. The pit has a depth of 411 meters (1348 feet) and is as big as 6000 soccer fields. Due to new environmental policies, coal mining will finally end in 2030. The area is to be transformed into a huge artificial lake.
